Kraken in Mexico: pesos in, dollars on the account

Kraken takes pesos by SPEI with no deposit fee from MXN 150, then converts them straight to US dollars. If you already think in dollars, that's a feature. If you trade in and out of pesos, it's two conversions per round trip. Here's the math.

A lot of expats in Mexico earn in dollars, spend in pesos and save in whichever currency feels safer that year. Kraken fits that life unusually well. You fund it from a Mexican bank by SPEI, the money becomes US dollars on arrival, and you buy crypto against USD. The flip side is that every peso round trip pays two currency conversions plus a 0.5% withdrawal fee.

Who's behind Kraken

Kraken is run by Payward, Inc., a San Francisco company founded in 2011 by Jesse Powell, which makes it one of the oldest exchanges still operating. The company says it has never had a hack that affected client funds. It holds US registrations, an EU license under MiCA from the Central Bank of Ireland and registrations in several European countries. You can see the full product range on the official Kraken site.

In Mexico, Kraken has no entity or license we could find. That's the norm: Banxico's rules keep Mexican banks and licensed fintechs from selling crypto to the public, so international exchanges serve Mexicans from abroad. Our guide to crypto legality in Mexico explains the framework.

Who can use the peso rail

The SPEI deposit asks for a CURP or RFC and a CLABE, and you can only fund from a CLABE registered to that CURP or RFC. In practice:

  • Mexican citizens and residents with a bank account in their name: straightforward.
  • Temporary or permanent residents: you receive a CURP with your residency card, and many expats also have an RFC for work or rentals. Make sure your bank has the same identifier on file.
  • Tourists and digital nomads on a visitor permit: no Mexican account, no SPEI. Your Kraken account follows your country of residence, so fund it there or use a card-based platform.

Kraken verifies identity in tiers through KYCKnow Your Customer: identity checks required under anti-money-laundering rules.. Basic levels ask for personal details, an ID and a selfie. The Pro level, which the OTC desk requires, can ask for more, including the source of your funds.

How a SPEI deposit works

Choose MXN and SPEI, enter your CURP or RFC and CLABE, and send the transfer from that account. The minimum is MXN 150, Kraken lists no deposit fee, and funds arrive within about 20 minutes. Kraken doesn't publish the margin it applies when converting your pesos to dollars, but the app lets you toggle between MXN and USD to see the live rate before you send. For a broader look at SPEI and exchanges, see our SPEI bank transfer guide.

The full round trip on MXN 10,000

We follow MXN 10,000 into bitcoin and back, using MXN 18.70 per dollar as a reference rate. Kraken's actual conversion rate will differ slightly.

The trading fees come from Kraken's fee schedule as it stood when we checked. Instant buys in the app cost 1% (1.5% on custom orders) and the quoted price includes a spreadThe gap between the price you're quoted and the market price. You pay it even when no fee is listed.. So the habit that saves money: use Kraken Pro with limit orders. On MXN 10,000, going from 1% to 0.40% saves roughly MXN 60 per purchase.

Withdrawing to a Mexican bank

Withdrawals draw from your USD balance. Kraken converts to pesos at the rate shown before you confirm and sends the money to your CLABE by SPEI, almost instantly. The fee is 0.5%, with a MXN 150 minimum. On MXN 30,000 that's MXN 150. It isn't huge, but Bitso withdraws by SPEI for free, so frequent sellers may prefer to move crypto there first. Our guide to cashing out in Mexico compares both.

Why the USD balance can be a plus

For dollar earners, Kraken's design removes a step. You can hold USD, move into stablecoinsTokens designed to hold a steady value, usually pegged one-to-one to the US dollar, such as USDT or USDC. at 0.20%, and only touch pesos when you need to pay rent. If you send money from the US to family in Mexico, our remittance guide shows where a USD-based exchange fits in that route.

The minus is for peso traders. Buying bitcoin with pesos on Monday and selling back to pesos on Friday means MXN → USD, USD → BTC, BTC → USD, USD → MXN. That's four conversions, two of them currency conversions with unpublished margins.

Records worth keeping for the SAT

If you're a Mexican tax resident, gains on crypto you sell count as income, and the dollar balance adds a wrinkle: the SAT works in pesos, so you'll need the exchange rate on the dates you bought and sold. Kraken lets you export your ledger and trade history as CSV files. Download them at least once a year, keep your SPEI receipts from your bank app, and note the MXN/USD rate Kraken applied on each deposit and withdrawal. That record makes it far easier for an accountant to separate currency movements from actual crypto gains. Our crypto tax guide for Mexico covers residents and non-residents.

Pi Network on Kraken

Kraken opened PI spot trading on 13 March 2026, just before "Pi Day". Coverage described it as the first major US-regulated exchange to list the token. Kraken also runs a dedicated page for selling PI in Mexico. Sell PI, the proceeds sit in USD, and you withdraw to your CLABE at 0.5%. You'll first need to finish Pi's KYC and migrate your coins to mainnet; our Pi Network guide walks through it.

The OTC desk

For six-figure trades, Kraken's OTCOver-the-counter: a trade negotiated directly with a desk instead of on the public order book, so a large order doesn't move the price. desk quotes privately. Its official page sets a USD 100,000 minimum per trade, with exceptions considered case by case, no separate fee (the cost sits in the quote), no maximum size over chat, and a Pro-verified account. Some secondary sources say the minimum dropped to USD 50,000; we couldn't confirm that. We also couldn't confirm whether the desk onboards Mexico residents on the same terms. Our Mexico OTC guide lists other desks.

Pros and cons

Pros
  • Free SPEI deposits from MXN 150, credited within about 20 minutes
  • Balance held in US dollars, handy for dollar earners and savers
  • Near-instant withdrawals to a CLABE
  • PI spot market since 13 March 2026, with a Mexico sell page
  • OTC desk with a published USD 100,000 minimum and no separate fee
Cons
  • You can't hold pesos; each deposit and withdrawal carries a conversion margin Kraken doesn't publish
  • 0.5% SPEI withdrawal fee, where Bitso charges nothing
  • Instant buys cost 1% plus spread
  • Only 10 minutes to send the transfer after generating details
  • No Mexican entity or license

Who Kraken suits

Kraken suits residents who think in dollars, people who'll use Kraken Pro with limit orders, PI holders who want a clean route to pesos, and larger investors who can use the OTC desk. It's weaker for anyone who trades in and out of pesos often, where the two conversions and the 0.5% withdrawal add up.

Frequently asked questions

Does Kraken work in Mexico?

Yes. Kraken serves Mexico residents and accepts pesos by SPEI from MXN 150 with no deposit fee. MXN can't be held on the account, so deposits convert to USD automatically. Withdrawals convert USD back to pesos and go to your CLABE for a 0.5% fee.

Can a foreigner use Kraken's SPEI deposits?

Only with a Mexican bank account in your name and a CURP or RFC that matches it. Temporary and permanent residents usually have both. A tourist with only a US bank account can't use the peso rail.

What does Kraken charge to buy bitcoin?

Kraken's fee schedule, as we checked it, showed 1% on instant buys in the app (1.5% on custom orders) plus a spread, and 0.40% maker / 0.80% taker at the entry tier of Kraken Pro, falling with 30-day volume. Stablecoin and FX pairs were 0.20%.

Can I sell Pi Network on Kraken from Mexico?

Yes. Kraken opened PI spot trading on 13 March 2026 and has a page for selling PI in Mexico. Proceeds land in USD, which you can withdraw as pesos by SPEI. You'll need your PI migrated to mainnet first; see our Pi Network guide.

No. We found no Mexican Kraken entity or license. That's normal for foreign exchanges, since Mexican rules keep banks and licensed fintechs from selling crypto to the public. Kraken is regulated in the US and holds an EU MiCA license from the Central Bank of Ireland.
