Mercado Pago is the payments arm of Mercado Libre, Latin America's largest online marketplace, and in Mexico it doubles as a digital wallet that millions of people use instead of a bank. Since late 2022 it has also let users buy and sell crypto from the same balance they use to pay for groceries or send money to friends.
If you live in Mexico, already have the app, and want to own a little bitcoin with almost no setup, it is hard to beat for convenience. If you are a visitor, or you want coins you can move freely, the picture is different. This guide covers how the feature works, what it really costs in pesos, who can use it, and the one limitation that matters most.
How crypto works inside Mercado Pago
Mercado Pago is not an exchange. When it launched bitcoin and ether trading in Mexico, it did so on top of Paxos, a US blockchain infrastructure company that executes the trades and holds the coins. Over time it widened the menu with Chainlink, Uniswap and Litecoin, and added Meli Dólar (MUSD), a dollar-pegged stablecoinA crypto token designed to hold a steady price, usually pegged 1:1 to the US dollar. issued by a Mercado Libre company, with the Argentine firm Ripio acting as custodian.
So when you tap "buy MXN 500 of bitcoin", a specialist firm buys it and records it under your account. That model is called custodyA company holds your crypto for you. Convenient, but you rely on it to use or withdraw your coins.. You do not get a bitcoin address of your own or a recovery phrase; you get a balance that the app displays.
There is a regulatory reason for this structure. Banco de México's Circular 4/2019 bars banks and regulated financial institutions from offering crypto to the public, so Mexican fintechs plug in outside specialists instead. It also means your crypto balance is not protected by IPAB, Mexico's deposit insurance.
Which coins are available
The menu has grown but is still short. Mercado Pago's official crypto page lists bitcoin (BTC) and ether (ETH), the two original coins; Chainlink (LINK) and Uniswap (UNI), two tokens that live on Ethereum; Litecoin (LTC), a bitcoin-style payments network covered in our Litecoin guide; and Meli Dólar (MUSD), which aims to stay at one US dollar and is the only coin with no trading fee. The Paxos dollar token "Dólar Cripto" (USDP), added in 2023, no longer appears on that page, although the help article on receiving crypto still mentions Pax Dólar on Ethereum, so check the crypto section in your app. There is no USDT, Solana, XRP, Dogecoin or Pi. For those you need an exchange, and our guide to crypto apps in Mexico compares the ones that work with pesos.
Mercado Pago crypto fees, with real numbers
The published fee is 1.5% including IVA (Mexico's 16% VAT) on each purchase and each sale of BTC or ETH, deducted from the amount you trade. Like most instant-buy products, there may also be a spreadThe gap between the price you are quoted and the market price. A cost that never shows up as a fee. that Mercado Pago does not disclose, so the real cost can be a bit higher.
Here is a full round trip with MXN 5,000, assuming the bitcoin price does not move:
| Step | Mercado Pago (1.5%) | Order-book exchange (0.78%) |
|---|---|---|
| You invest | MXN 5,000.00 | MXN 5,000.00 |
| Buy fee | −MXN 75.00 | −MXN 39.00 |
| Your bitcoin is worth | MXN 4,925.00 | MXN 4,961.00 |
| Sell fee | −MXN 73.88 | −MXN 38.70 |
| You receive | MXN 4,851.12 | MXN 4,922.30 |
| Total cost | MXN 148.88 (≈3%) | MXN 77.70 (≈1.6%) |
The right-hand column uses Bitso's entry-level takerA trader who fills an order already sitting in the order book. Takers usually pay a slightly higher fee than makers. fee of 0.78%, with free SPEI deposits. In plain terms, bitcoin bought on Mercado Pago has to rise about 3% just for you to break even. That is fine if you buy now and then and hold, and expensive if you trade in and out.
Meli Dólar changes the math: with no fee, buying and selling MUSD inside the app is close to free, although the peso-dollar rate you get still matters.
Estimates using published fees: Bitso 0.13–0.78% (SPEI), Mercado Pago 1.5% + store fee (OXXO), CEX.IO 0.49–4.99% (card), CoinFlip 6% + MXN 50 (ATM). Excludes spread and network fees.
Limits and how to fund your balance
The minimum is MXN 1 per order and the cap is MXN 100,000 per day; press reports put the monthly cap at MXN 400,000. You can top up in two ways:
- SPEI bank transfer, free. Copy your Mercado Pago CLABE (Mexico's 18-digit account number) and send from your Mexican bank app. Our SPEI guide explains daily transfer caps.
- Cash at stores: more than 45,000 points accept deposits, including OXXO, 7-Eleven, Soriana, Circle K and Farmacias del Ahorro. You generate a barcode in the app and pay at the till; OXXO usually adds a store fee of roughly MXN 15–20. The cash and OXXO guide compares the other cash routes.
Step by step: buying and selling
- Verify your account. Mercado Pago may ask for official ID and a selfie before enabling crypto. Do it before you need it.
- Add funds. Send a SPEI transfer or pay cash at a store. The balance shows up within minutes.
- Open Criptomonedas. It sits in the app's main menu. Choose a coin, such as bitcoin, ether or Meli Dólar.
- Enter an amount in pesos. The app shows the fee and the crypto you will receive before you confirm. Screenshot it for your records.
- To sell, reverse it. Pick the coin, tap "Vender" (sell), and pesos land back in your balance. From there you can transfer to a bank by SPEI or withdraw cash.
For cash after selling, since July 2025 Mercado Pago allows withdrawals at OXXO with its physical card and PIN: up to MXN 3,000 per withdrawal with a MXN 20 fee including IVA. Our guide to selling crypto in Mexico covers that and every other cash-out route.
Can you withdraw to an external wallet?
This is the question that matters most, and the answer differs by direction.
Receiving is documented. Mercado Pago's help article on receiving crypto says you tap "Recibir" in the Criptomonedas section, copy your address and have the coin sent on the matching network: bitcoin on Bitcoin; ether, Pax Dólar, Chainlink and Uniswap on Ethereum; Litecoin on Litecoin. Receiving is free with no daily limit, and can take up to three hours to show. A wrong address or network can mean lost funds.
Sending to an external wallet is not documented. The crypto page talks about transfers and says sends between Mercado Pago accounts are instant and free, but we found no official guide for Mexico on sending bitcoin or ether to an outside address, on which network or for what fee. In Chile the company did announce sending and receiving.
The implication is simple: you do not hold the private keysThe cryptographic keys that move your coins. Whoever controls them controls the funds.. Your bitcoin exists as a balance in the custodian's records. Until an outbound route is documented, do not count on paying someone on the Bitcoin network, moving it to a hardware wallet, or taking it with you if you leave Mexico. If Mercado Pago ever changes its terms or freezes your account, your only exit is selling for pesos inside the app.
For small amounts or for learning, that may not bother you. If you want long-term savings in bitcoin under your control, buy where withdrawals are supported and move the coins to your own wallet; our crypto wallet guide walks through the options.
Buy with a debit or credit card, including cards issued outside Mexico, and withdraw to the address you choose. The platform is registered as an MSB with FinCEN in the US and with the UK FCA.
Is it safe? The real risks
Separate the company from the asset. Mercado Libre is a large listed company and custody sits with specialist firms, so the risk of the app vanishing with your money is low compared with an unknown website. The asset is another story: bitcoin can fall 20% in a week, nobody guarantees its price, and Mexico's financial consumer agency CONDUSEF reminds users that no authority backs crypto.
Account security is on you. Turn on two-step verification, choose a PIN that is not your birthday, and ignore any message claiming to be Mercado Pago that asks for codes. The common fraud in Mexico is not hacking but someone talking you into giving access; our crypto scams guide lists the usual patterns.
Is Mercado Pago crypto worth it?
- Buy from MXN 1 with a balance you already use, no new account needed
- Cash top-ups at 45,000+ stores and free SPEI deposits
- Meli Dólar trades with no fee for holding digital dollars
- Receive BTC, ETH, LINK, UNI and LTC from other wallets at no cost
- Sale proceeds land in your balance immediately
- 1.5% to buy plus 1.5% to sell: about 3% per round trip
- Six coins (BTC, ETH, LINK, UNI, LTC and Meli Dólar); no USDT, SOL or XRP
- Sending to external wallets is undocumented: you do not control the keys
- Instant-buy spread is not published
It is worth it if you live in Mexico, already use the app, and want to start small, or if you get paid in cash and have no other account. Parking part of your balance in Meli Dólar fee-free can also make sense. It stops making sense when you trade often, invest several thousand pesos at a time (where an exchange with an order bookA public list of buy and sell orders. Placing a limit order there usually costs less than an instant buy. saves real money), or want your coins outside the app. A good next read is our Bitso review, the main Mexican exchange with peso pairs.

Which coin to buy on Mercado Pago
We will not tell you what to invest in, because that depends on your goals and risk tolerance. Here is what each option is. Bitcoin is the oldest and most liquid crypto, often bought as long-term savings; see our bitcoin guide. Ether powers the Ethereum network and historically swings harder than bitcoin in both directions. Litecoin, Chainlink and Uniswap are smaller bets: Litecoin is a long-running payments network, while Chainlink and Uniswap depend on how much their Ethereum projects get used, and all three tend to swing more than bitcoin. Meli Dólar is not designed to rise: it aims to stay at one dollar, which can shield part of your balance from peso moves, with the different risk that it depends on the issuer's reserves. If what you really want is portable digital dollars, the stablecoin most used in Mexico is USDT, which Mercado Pago does not offer; our USDT guide explains how to get it.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Mercado Pago charge to buy bitcoin in Mexico?
Mercado Pago states a 1.5% fee, Mexican VAT (IVA) included, on every bitcoin or ether purchase and on every sale. A buy followed by a sell costs about 3% of the amount, before any price spread the app does not publish. Meli Dólar (MUSD) is the only coin with no fee.
Can I send bitcoin from Mercado Pago to my own wallet?
Receiving is documented, sending out is not. Mercado Pago's help center explains how to receive bitcoin on the Bitcoin network; ether, Pax Dólar, Chainlink and Uniswap on Ethereum; and Litecoin on its own network, at no cost. We found no official guide for sending BTC or ETH from the Mexican app to an external wallet, with networks and fees. If you want to hold your own keys, buy on a platform that supports withdrawals; see our wallet guide.
Can foreigners or tourists use Mercado Pago crypto?
The Mexican account is built for residents: you typically need a Mexican phone number and identity verification, and banking features work most smoothly with a Mexican bank account for SPEI. We could not confirm whether a foreign passport alone unlocks the crypto section. Visitors usually find it simpler to buy with a foreign card on an international platform.
Is Mercado Pago crypto safe?
The app belongs to a large listed company and custody is handled by specialist firms (Paxos and Ripio). Still, crypto is not covered by Mexico's deposit insurance (IPAB), its price can drop sharply, and you depend on Mercado Pago keeping the service running. Turn on two-step verification and never share codes.
What is the maximum I can buy?
MXN 100,000 per day. Press reports cite a monthly cap of MXN 400,000. The minimum per order is MXN 1.
Do I owe tax in Mexico if I sell at a gain?
If you are a Mexican tax resident, a gain on a sale is income you report in your annual return. Non-residents face different rules. Our Mexico crypto tax guide covers both cases.
