Plenty of people in Mexico hold money in PayPal: freelancers paid by foreign clients, online sellers, and Americans who never closed their US account. So "can I buy crypto with PayPal here?" is a fair question. The answer depends entirely on which country your PayPal account belongs to, not where you happen to be standing.
Mexican PayPal accounts: no crypto
PayPal launched crypto buying and selling for US accounts in 2020, added the UK in 2021 and Luxembourg in December 2022. Its US help center lists the coins on offer there (PayPal USD, bitcoin, ether, litecoin, bitcoin cash, Solana and Chainlink) and mentions no other countries. We also checked PayPal's official page listing where its stablecoin is available: Mexico is not on it.
That fits Mexican rules. Banco de México's Circular 4/2019 bars regulated financial institutions from offering crypto to the public, which is why no Mexican bank or e-money app sells bitcoin. The guide on whether crypto is legal in Mexico explains the framework.
US PayPal accounts: where it gets interesting
If you're American, your US PayPal account may offer the crypto hub: buy, sell and hold, and, per PayPal's own availability table, send, receive and transfer crypto to external wallets. Two situations:
You're visiting. Your account doesn't change because you're in Tulum for a week. Expect extra security prompts when logging in from a Mexican IP address, and approve them in the app.
You've moved to Mexico. PayPal's US crypto pages are written for US and US-territory customers. We couldn't confirm how PayPal treats US accounts held by people who now live abroad, so check your account terms before relying on it, and don't misstate your residence to keep a feature.
Moving value from US PayPal to pesos
In principle, a US account holder can buy bitcoin or PYUSD in PayPal, send it to their own deposit address on an exchange that operates in Mexico, sell it for pesos and withdraw by SPEI to a Mexican bank. It works on paper, but it stacks costs and steps:
- PayPal's spreadThe gap between the price you pay and the market price. It is built into the quote rather than shown as a separate fee. when you buy.
- The right networkThe blockchain a coin travels on. Sending over a network the receiving platform doesn't support can lose the funds.: PYUSD exists on more than one blockchain, and you must send on one your exchange accepts.
- The exchange's trading fee when you sell, plus its withdrawal fee.
- Mexican ID: Bitso and Binance require a CURP to withdraw pesos, which residents have and tourists don't.
For regular transfers home or to family, compare this with the routes in the guide to sending money to Mexico with crypto. Mexican tax residents also report gains to the SAT, explained in the Mexico crypto tax guide.
Paid through PayPal Mexico? The clean route
Many remote workers and online sellers in Mexico are paid into a Mexican PayPal account. The safe way to turn that balance into crypto takes one extra step, but it never puts your money in a stranger's hands:
- Withdraw your PayPal balance to a Mexican bank account in your name.
- Send the pesos by SPEI to the CLABE your exchange shows you.
- Buy on the exchange, ideally with a limit order on the peso order book.
If your balance is in dollars, PayPal converts it to pesos at its own exchange rate, which includes a margin. Compare that rate with the market rate before withdrawing; on larger amounts the difference adds up. Once the pesos are in your bank, SPEI deposits to the main exchanges are free, and a limit order avoids most of the instant-buy markup. The whole cycle usually finishes the same day, and every step leaves a receipt you can show your bank or the SAT if asked.
PYUSD: PayPal's stablecoin and how to get it in Mexico
PayPal USD is a stablecoinA crypto token designed to hold a steady value, here one US dollar, backed by reserves. pegged 1:1 to the dollar and issued by Paxos Trust Company for PayPal. In March 2026 PayPal opened it to about 70 markets, including Colombia, Peru, Guatemala, Costa Rica and other Latin American countries. Mexico isn't on the official list.
You can still hold it from Mexico: Bitso runs a PYUSD/MXN order book, so you can buy it with pesos like any other coin, or sell PYUSD you received for pesos. For most people who want digital dollars, USDT and USDC have deeper liquidity and more network options; the USDT guide compares them. PYUSD mostly makes sense when someone in the US sends it to you from PayPal.
Why paying for USDT with PayPal on P2P goes wrong
Search for "buy USDT with PayPal" and you'll find P2P ads and Telegram groups that accept it. It's one of the riskiest ways to buy crypto, for both sides.
The core problem is the chargebackA reversal of a payment: the payer asks the payment provider to return the money, which can happen even after the other side delivered.. A PayPal payment can be disputed days later; a crypto transfer can't be undone. A seller who releases USDT against a PayPal payment can lose both the coins and the money. A P2P platform's escrowThe platform locks the seller's crypto until the seller confirms payment. It protects against non-payment, not against a payment reversed later. doesn't help, because the coins were already released.
As a buyer, you face a different set of problems:
- "Pay as Friends and Family." Sellers ask this so they can't be charged back. You give up PayPal's buyer protection; if the USDT never arrives, you have little recourse.
- High premiums. Sellers price in their risk. Check how far an ad is above market with the calculator below.
- Account limits. Using personal payments for repeated trades can get your PayPal balance frozen.
- Scam magnet. Stolen PayPal accounts used to pay, fake screenshots, sellers who vanish.
If you want to buy from another person, use a P2P platform with escrow and pay by SPEI from an account in your own name. The rules are in the P2P crypto guide and the crypto scams guide.
Better alternatives
| Method | How it works | Published cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Debit card | Visa or Mastercard on an international platform | 0.49%–4.99% + service charge (CEX.IO), in USD | Visitors and first purchases |
| SPEI transfer | Send pesos to an exchange CLABE, buy in pesos | Free deposit; 0.60%–0.78% on Bitso's entry tier | Residents with a Mexican bank |
| Mercado Pago | Buy BTC or ETH with your wallet balance | 1.5% per trade, VAT included | Existing Mercado Pago users |
| PayPal withdrawal + SPEI | Withdraw to a Mexican bank, then fund an exchange | PayPal's FX rate + trading fee | People paid through PayPal Mexico |
A card is the closest thing to the PayPal experience: few steps and an instant purchase. A US card billed in dollars avoids currency conversion; the card buying guide covers declines and cash-advance traps. SPEI is the cheapest once you have a Mexican account, as explained in the SPEI bank transfer guide. Mercado Pago, Mexico's other big digital wallet, does sell crypto in-app, with a short coin list; see the Mercado Pago guide.
Open an account, verify with your passport and pay with Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay or Google Pay. The platform is registered with FinCEN as an MSB (NMLS 1804170) and with the UK FCA.
Exchanges that "accept PayPal"
Some international exchanges show a PayPal logo among their payment methods, which causes confusion. On CEX.IO, for example, PayPal and Venmo are listed as available for the US only. We found no official Binance help page listing PayPal as a deposit method. If a site promises "buy bitcoin with PayPal from Mexico in seconds", look at who's behind it: it's usually a P2P middleman or a reseller with a markup.
The short version
A Mexican PayPal account is money you withdraw to your bank, not a crypto wallet. A US PayPal account can buy and send crypto, but the route to pesos is long and costly compared with a card or SPEI. Avoid P2P ads that want PayPal, especially "Friends and Family". And if you want PYUSD in Mexico, it's on Bitso, not in PayPal.
Make a first purchase of about USD 25 and check every fee before moving more.
Frequently asked questions
Can I buy crypto with PayPal in Mexico?
Not with a Mexican PayPal account. PayPal's crypto feature launched for US accounts in 2020 and later reached the UK and Luxembourg, and we found Mexico on no official PayPal list. You can withdraw a Mexican PayPal balance to a Mexican bank and fund an exchange by SPEI.
I have a US PayPal account. Can I use its crypto features in Mexico?
PayPal's crypto help pages are written for US and US-territory customers. If you are a US resident traveling, your account should keep working subject to PayPal's security checks. If you have moved to Mexico, check whether your account still qualifies under PayPal's terms; we couldn't confirm how PayPal treats US accounts held by people living abroad.
Is it safe to buy USDT with PayPal on P2P?
It is one of the riskiest routes. PayPal payments can be disputed after the crypto is released, so honest sellers rarely accept them, and those who do charge a high premium or ask you to pay as Friends and Family, which gives up buyer protection. PayPal Mexico's Acceptable Use Policy also lists crypto among activities that need PayPal's prior approval to accept payments.
What is PYUSD and can I get it in Mexico?
PYUSD (PayPal USD) is a dollar stablecoin issued by Paxos for PayPal. PayPal extended it to about 70 markets in March 2026; Mexico is not on the official list. You can still buy it with pesos on Bitso, which runs a PYUSD/MXN order book.
Does Binance accept PayPal?
We found no official Binance help page listing PayPal as a deposit method. In Mexico, Binance takes pesos by SPEI through its payments company Medá.
