Bitcoin ATMs in Mexico: where they are and what they charge

Mexico has around a hundred Bitcoin ATMs, most of them in Mexico City, plus a handful in Cancún and the Riviera Maya. They are the fastest way to turn pesos into bitcoin or back, and the most expensive one, so check fees and location before you go.

If you are traveling through Mexico with crypto, a Bitcoin ATM looks like the obvious bridge to pesos. Some machines take your cash and send bitcoin to your phone in minutes; two-way machines also buy bitcoin from you and hand over pesos. No Mexican bank account, no exchange sign-up, no waiting on a transfer.

That convenience is priced in, though, and machines come and go. This guide covers how many Bitcoin ATMs Mexico has, which cities and tourist areas they are in, what they charge in real pesos, what ID they ask for, and how to use one without making the costliest mistake: scanning the wrong address.

How many Bitcoin ATMs are in Mexico?

The industry reference is CoinATMRadar, a map that compiles machines reported by operators and users. The most solid figure we could access, cited by Statista, is 66 ATMs in Mexico as of 10 June 2024, with 35 in Mexico City. A UPay article published in May 2026 cites 101 machines based on CoinATMRadar, but does not say when that count was taken.

For scale, the whole country had just 13 machines in early 2022. Most of the growth came from CoinFlip, a US operator that arrived in 2024 and placed kiosks in malls, cafés and Panini stores, alongside local operators such as BTM Cripto, BitcoinX and Bitlem.

Bitcoin ATMs by city

The same listing has one machine each in Aguascalientes, Cabo San Lucas, Culiacán and San Luis Potosí. For Playa del Carmen and Tulum, older articles mention machines and one listing site shows a single Playa location, but neither town appears in the latest breakdown, so treat them as unconfirmed. On Isla Mujeres, the BTC Isla project says dozens of merchants accept bitcoin over LightningA payments layer built on top of Bitcoin for small, near-instant payments with tiny fees., which can be easier than hunting for an ATM; merchant counts are self-reported.

Finding a "Bitcoin ATM near me"

Google Maps lists some machines but is unreliable for this. Use CoinATMRadar, which filters by city, operator and type and shows reported fees, and the operator's own app: CoinFlip's app maps its kiosks and opening hours.

Is there a Walmart Bitcoin ATM in Mexico?

No. The idea comes from the US, where Walmart ran a pilot in 2021 with Coinstar kiosks in 200 stores that sold bitcoin through Coinme. We found no Bitcoin ATM at Walmart, Bodega Aurrera or Sam's Club in Mexico, and Walmart de México has announced nothing similar. If a social-media ad invites you to "buy bitcoin at Walmart" in Mexico, be suspicious.

How Bitcoin ATMs work

There are two kinds. Buy-only machines take banknotes and send bitcoin (sometimes litecoin, ether or USDT too) to the wallet you choose. Two-way machines also buy crypto from you: you send bitcoin to an address the screen shows and, once it arrives, the machine pays out pesos. CoinFlip announced cash withdrawals from MXN 500 to MXN 50,000 per day in Mexico, and BTM Cripto runs two-way machines.

The ATM does not hold your coins. You need your own wallet with a receiving addressA string of letters and numbers, usually shown as a QR code, where you receive bitcoin. Think of it as an account number for crypto. that you scan at the machine. ID checks for foreigners

Mexican ATMs apply KYCKnow your customer: identity checks required under anti-money-laundering rules. like any exchange, in tiers. Small amounts usually need just a phone number that receives a code; larger amounts mean scanning an ID and taking a selfie. According to Expansión, CoinFlip's Mexican registration asks for an INE (the Mexican voter ID card), selfie, phone, RFC (Mexican tax ID) and email. That raises two practical questions for visitors: whether a passport is accepted instead of an INE, and whether a foreign phone number can receive the code. We could not confirm either for every operator, so ask before relying on a machine, and carry your passport. Press reports cite CoinFlip purchase limits from about USD 20 up to USD 16,000 per transaction, depending on verification.

What Bitcoin ATMs cost

CoinFlip lists 6% plus MXN 50 per transaction in Mexico. In Cancún, one machine on CoinATMRadar showed about 6.6% to buy and 8.2% to sell. The fee is usually built into the exchange rate on screen, so compare the machine's bitcoin price with the market price before you insert cash.

An example: buying with MXN 3,000 at 6% + MXN 50 costs 180 + 50 = MXN 230, about 7.7%. The same purchase over SPEI on an exchange charging 0.78% costs around MXN 23. On MXN 500 the fixed fee hurts more: 30 + 50 = MXN 80, or 16%. Add the network feeWhat you pay miners to process your transaction. It rises when the Bitcoin network is busy. if the operator charges it separately.

If you need pesos rather than bitcoin, compare with simply withdrawing from a regular bank ATM using your home debit card: you will pay your bank's foreign-ATM charges plus the Mexican bank's fee, so add both up and compare the total with the 6–8% a Bitcoin ATM takes. Step by step: using a Bitcoin ATM

  1. Confirm the machine works. Check CoinATMRadar or the operator's app: is it active, which coins, buy-only or two-way?
  2. Prepare your wallet. Open your wallet app, tap Receive and have the bitcoin address ready as a QR code. Make sure it is a Bitcoin address, not another network.
  3. Verify. Enter your phone number and the code you receive. If the amount requires it, scan your ID and take the selfie.
  4. Scan your QR and read the screen. It shows the price per bitcoin, the fee and what you will receive. If it looks wrong, cancel before inserting cash.
  5. Insert pesos and confirm. Feed notes one at a time, check the total, confirm. Keep the receipt; it has the transaction ID.
  6. Wait for confirmationWhen a Bitcoin block includes your transaction. One or more confirmations mean it is recorded.. Bitcoin shows as pending, then settles within minutes to an hour depending on network traffic.

To sell at a two-way machine, reverse the flow: choose Sell, send bitcoin from your wallet to the address shown, and once the network confirms, collect your pesos or a code to withdraw them.

Safety: the Bitcoin ATM scam

The most common scam involving these machines is not technical. Someone calls pretending to be your bank, the police, a government office or a relative in trouble, and tells you to withdraw cash and deposit it at a Bitcoin ATM "to protect your money". They send a QR code by WhatsApp. That QR is the scammer's wallet, and once sent, the transaction cannot be reversed.

Use machines in busy places during business hours, do not count cash in the open, and keep the receipt until the bitcoin confirms. Our crypto scams guide covers other common frauds.

When a Bitcoin ATM makes sense

A Bitcoin ATM is worth it when you hold pesos in cash, want a small amount of bitcoin delivered straight to your own wallet, and do not want to open accounts during a trip. It also works for an occasional cash-out if a two-way machine is close. It does not make sense for regular saving or large amounts: on every MXN 10,000 you leave roughly MXN 650 at the machine. For anything recurring, a card purchase or an exchange account is far cheaper; start with our guide to buying bitcoin in Mexico.

Usually, yes, but expect identity checks. Small amounts typically need only a phone number for a code; larger ones need ID and a selfie.
