Shiba Inu launched in 2020 as the self-styled "Dogecoin killer" and became one of the most searched meme coins anywhere, Mexico included. If you're here to find out where to buy it, the answer has a twist: no exchange runs a SHIB/peso market. Not Bitso, not Binance, nobody. You always go through another coin, usually USDT, or pay by card on a platform that bills in dollars.
If you already know SHIB from a US app, a couple of things work differently here, from how you fund your account to whether moving your coins across the border makes sense. This guide covers the real routes, what each step costs and the two things most guides gloss over: Ethereum fees on small balances, and the "price with many zeros" trap.
What Shiba Inu is
SHIB is an ERC-20The token standard on the Ethereum network. Moving these tokens on-chain pays gas in ETH, not in the token itself. token on Ethereum. Unlike Dogecoin, it has no blockchain of its own: every on-chain transfer is an Ethereum transaction paying gas in ETH. Around SHIB sits a wider ecosystem, including Shibarium, a separate network built for cheaper transactions, and the BONE token used to pay fees there.
Supply is huge. About 589 trillion SHIB circulate. In 2021 Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin burned roughly 410 trillion SHIB that had been sent to his wallet unasked. That scale is why the price per token carries so many zeros.
Your routes to SHIB from Mexico
| Route | How it works | SHIB market | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| International exchange | Pesos to USDT by SPEI or P2P, then USDT to SHIB | SHIB/USDT | Two trades, two fees |
| Bitso plus exchange | Buy USDT on Bitso, send it over | SHIB/USDT at destination | Bitso's USDT withdrawal fee |
| Card | Direct purchase on a platform listing SHIB | Direct buy | Billed in USD |
| Crypto you already hold | Swap on an exchange | SHIB/USDT | Network fees to move it in |
The USDT route
Binance, OKX and Bybit all serve users in Mexico and run liquid SHIB/USDT markets. Step one is getting USDTTether's dollar-pegged stablecoin, the bridge currency for buying almost any coin without a peso pair.: on Binance by depositing pesos by SPEI through its local payments entity, Medá, or on any of the three through P2P. Step two is swapping USDT for SHIB on the spot market.
Alternatively, buy USDT on Bitso, which has a USDT/MXN book, and send it to the exchange where you'll buy SHIB. Bitso charges 3.4 USDT to withdraw USDT on Tron and 0.01 USDT on Polygon, so the network matters. The USDT page explains networks in detail.
Buying USDT through P2P? Check the ad's premium against the market rate first:
The P2P guide explains the safety rules: pay and release only inside the order chat, and never accept payments from third-party accounts.
Visitors and the card route
Without a CURP or a Mexican bank account, the card route is the practical one. A platform billing in US dollars spares a US card any conversion. If your bank declines the charge as high-risk, approve it in your banking app or call them. The card guide has more.
Buy Shiba Inu with Visa or Mastercard, no USDT detour. You'll see the US-dollar total before confirming.
What about Bitso?
Bitso announced SHIB in January 2022, and its current fee table lists SHIB deposits and withdrawals on Ethereum, with a 3,380 SHIB withdrawal fee. Its public API, however, shows no SHIB order book, neither SHIB/MXN nor SHIB/USD. If the app offers a pesos-to-SHIB convert option, the cost is built into the quote. See the Bitso review and the Binance review for account requirements.
ERC-20 fees: when moving costs more than buying
Buying and holding SHIB inside an exchange pays no gas. The trouble starts when you move it.
Withdrawing from an exchange costs the platform's flat fee. But once SHIB sits in your own wallet, every transfer pays Ethereum gasThe fee Ethereum charges to process a transaction, paid in ETH. It climbs when the network is busy. in ETH. Two consequences:
You need ETH as well as SHIB. A wallet with millions of SHIB and zero ETH can't send anything.
Small balances suffer. At busy times, an ERC-20 transfer on mainnet can cost one dollar or several. On a 300-peso position, two or three moves can eat a meaningful share of it. For small amounts, leaving SHIB on the exchange, or using a cheaper network that both sides support, is often the sensible choice.
The same logic applies if you're relocating with SHIB on a US platform. Moving the token itself pays gas at least once and possibly twice. Selling to a stablecoin before you move, then sending the stablecoin on a low-fee network, is often cheaper. Run the numbers on your actual balance.
Does Shibarium solve the fee problem?
Partly. Shibarium is the SHIB community's own network, where transactions are far cheaper than on Ethereum mainnet and fees are paid in BONE. The catch is getting there: moving SHIB from Ethereum onto Shibarium goes through a bridge, which itself is an Ethereum transaction paying gas, and bridges add their own smart-contract risk. You also need BONE in your wallet to transact once you arrive. And many exchanges, Bitso included, only accept SHIB on Ethereum, so getting back to pesos may mean bridging out again. For someone buying a few thousand pesos of SHIB to hold, Shibarium rarely changes the math; it matters more for people actively using apps in that ecosystem.
The many-zeros trap
The most common SHIB mistake is assuming that a tiny price per token means "more room to grow". That's unit bias, and the cure is market capPrice per token multiplied by all tokens in circulation: the total value the market assigns to a coin..
The arithmetic, with no forecast attached: about 589 trillion SHIB circulate. For each to be worth one peso, the market cap would need to hit about 589 trillion pesos, on the order of 30 trillion dollars. That's more than ten times the highest value bitcoin has ever reached. Not impossible by definition, but useful context for videos promising "the next peso".
What matters is how many pesos you put in and what they're worth now. Millions of SHIB or a sliver of bitcoin bought with the same 900 pesos is the same decision: 900 pesos in a volatile asset. The risk profile differs; the number of units on your screen doesn't.
Volatility and other risks
SHIB has staged spectacular rallies and fallen more than 80% from its peaks. There are no cash flows underneath it; the price runs on community attention, token burns and overall market mood. For a meme coinA coin born from an internet joke or trend, priced almost entirely on social media interest., that's normal.
Risks beyond price:
- Fake tokens. Look-alike tokens with similar names circulate. On a decentralized exchange, verify the contract address from the official site.
- "Burn" and airdrop pitches. Groups asking you to send SHIB or connect your wallet for rewards. These are classic scams; the crypto scams guide covers them.
- Leverage. Some exchanges offer leveraged SHIB trading. At this volatility, leveraged positions get liquidated fast.
Selling SHIB and taxes
Keep a simple log of every purchase and sale with its date and peso value; exchanges' export tools help, but they won't cover transfers between platforms. Then reverse the route: sell SHIB for USDT, then sell the USDT for pesos on P2P or send it to Bitso to sell on USDT/MXN and withdraw by SPEI. Without a Mexican account, withdraw the USDT to a platform or bank you use at home. Mexican tax residents report gains to the SAT, and swapping SHIB for USDT may itself count as a disposal; non-residents are generally taxed where they live. The crypto taxes in Mexico guide has the details.
Which route fits
Small, quick buy: a card avoids the USDT detour. Several thousand pesos: the USDT route with a limit order on SHIB/USDT is usually cheaper. Planning to self-custody: budget for the ETH you'll need to move it. For a meme coin with its own chain, compare Dogecoin; to understand gas, see Ethereum; everything else is on the coins hub.
Choose an amount, check the dollar total and confirm. If you withdraw later, remember you'll need ETH to move it.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I buy Shiba Inu in Mexico?
On international exchanges that serve Mexico, such as Binance, OKX and Bybit, on the SHIB/USDT market. You buy USDT with pesos first, by SPEI or P2P. Card platforms that list SHIB sell it directly in US dollars. No exchange offers SHIB/MXN.
Does Bitso sell Shiba Inu?
Bitso listed SHIB in 2022, and its current fee table covers SHIB deposits and withdrawals on Ethereum. Its public API shows no SHIB order book against pesos or dollars, though. Check the app for a convert option; if it isn't there, use the USDT route.
I hold SHIB on a US exchange. Should I move it to Mexico?
Often it's cheaper not to. Moving an ERC-20 token pays Ethereum gas, and on a modest balance that can sting. Selling SHIB to a stablecoin abroad and sending the stablecoin on a cheap network usually costs less. If you do move SHIB, confirm the destination accepts the same network.
Can Shiba Inu reach one cent or one peso?
We don't predict prices, but we can do the arithmetic. With about 589 trillion SHIB in circulation, one peso per SHIB implies a market cap of about 589 trillion pesos, on the order of 30 trillion dollars, more than ten times bitcoin's highest-ever value.
Do I need a CURP to buy SHIB in Mexico?
Only for peso rails. Buying USDT with pesos by SPEI generally needs a CURP. Without one, you can buy SHIB by card, or use USDT or other crypto you already own.
